His collection has been generously donated by his wife, Freddi. Dick dedicated his life to plants and ecology. We hope his passion and memory lives on in the plants he cared for so dearly.

Raised Beds: How to Build and Use Them in an Urban Garden
11 AM – 12:30 PM | 1 PM – 2:30 PM
Raised beds have many benefits for urban and suburban gardeners. During this class, W.S. Jenks & Son’s urban farming expert will walk you through different raised bed construction methods, as well as advice on how conditions such as where you construct your raised bed, how you feed and water your plants, and soil conditions can impact your chances of success. Participants will also be able to watch and help the W.S. Jenks team build a demonstration raised bed. After 158 Years, W.S. Jenks & Son has earned the reputation as “Washington’s Oldest Hardware Store.”
Tickets are required for this workshop, but please pay what you can to attend. Our suggested ticket price is $30 for this class (or $24 for FONA members). This revenue helps us cover the cost of the presenter, classroom tent, and staff time. Participants will also receive a discount at W.S. Jenks & Son on soil, lawn, and garden equipment for 2 weeks after the class. Full refunds are provided for refund requests received up to 3 days prior to the program date.
ARTboretum
10 AM – 2 PM
ARTboretum is a free, family-friendly event celebrating the intersection between art and nature. This child-centered, family-focused event for children ages 2 to 12 will include face painting, arts, crafts, and games. These activities are offered by DC Child Care Connections, the District’s Child Care Resource and Referral program funded through the Office of the State Superintendent of Education’s Division of Early Learning.
Please pre-register for ARTboretum. Parental or guardian supervision is required during all family activities.
Want to join the Garden Fair & Plant Sale volunteer team? We need volunteers to price and move plants during the week before the event. We also need volunteers to help at the event as greeters, cashiers, plant experts, shopping cart wranglers, and more.
FONA could not host this event without the incredible support of volunteers. Fill out our event volunteer interest form and we’ll get back to you soon with more information.
Special thanks to Bartlett Tree Experts and Harris Teeter for supporting this event! We are grateful to in-kind donations from American Plant, Adcocks Nursery, Foxborough Nursery, Hawksridge Farms, Manor View Farm, Monrovia, Pender Nursery, Piedmont Carolina, Pleasant Run Nursery, Rare Tree Nursery, and Youngblood Nursery.
This project was supported by a grant from HumanitiesDC as part of the ‘Humanities Grant Program,’ an initiative funded by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.
Huge thanks to Terry MacFarlane and his team for helping transport these plants back to the Arboretum.
What happens if there is inclement weather on April 27th?
In the event of inclement weather, some or all of this event may be moved to Sunday, April 28th. Check our website on the afternoon of April 25th for details.
Can I bring my dog to this event?
Dogs are not allowed in the Plant Sale tent, but are allowed on leash in the Vendor Village. Dogs are not recommended since the event can get very crowded.
Do I have to carry my plants all the way back to my car?
Free plant sitting is available next to the Plant Sale tent so you can put your plants down while you enjoy the rest of the event. When you are ready to pack up your plants, you can drive your car right up to the plant sitting tent and we will help you load your plants.
Do I have to pay for the shuttle service to transport me between the parking lot and the event?
No, the shuttle service is provided free of charge.
Do I have to pay for parking?
No, all parking at the National Arboretum is free. Please park at either the R Street lot or Grove lot, and a free shuttle bus will transport you to the event.
How do I become a volunteer for the Garden Fair & Plant Sale?
We couldn’t make this event possible without volunteers! Fill out our event volunteer interest form and we will get back to you with more details.
What else is there to see at the National Arboretum this time of year?
There is lots to see! The Azalea Collections are often in full bloom this time of year. Visit their website to learn more about what the Arboretum has to offer.

We will share information about the 2024 Fall Festival in the summer of 2024.

The Native Plant Sale takes place every year in March in conjunction with the National Arboretum’s Lahr Native Plants Symposium. Our annual Native Plant Sale includes a small number of plant vendors (~3-5 vendors) from across the mid-Atlantic selling spring ephemerals and many other choice perennials and woody plants. We will share more information about the 2025 Native Plant Sale in early 2025.
VENDOR APPLICATION
