Many fruits and vegetables with rich cultural connections to our D.C. community grow in the Washington Youth Garden. The hakurei turnip is one such vegetable growing in the garden right now. The hakurei turnip (Brassica rapa), also known as Tokyo turnip, is a relatively recent root vegetable variety that was developed in the 1950s in Japan when the country was experiencing famine brought on by World War II.
