The new! The best! The hard-to-find!
That's what was offered - and what we sold out of! - at the FONA tent at this
year's Garden Fair.
Here are some of the highlights:
- Intersectional peonies, including some yellow ones. These treasures normally sell
for huge sums, but FONA was able to secure a range at more reasonable prices.
-
Great
new hydrangeas in a range of sizes. There are the newest rebloomers, some very compact
ones, choice Japanese lacecaps, and other hard-to find- cultivars
- Some choice new lilacs developed at USNA
-
Hypericums with great berries
in fall. Both this year and last these flew off the tables.
- Many plants that bloom in the late summer and fall, including a dwarf Lespedeza
and really rare Indigofera amblyantha (which actually blooms from May till Thanksgiving)
-
An assortment of the newest introductions
to the line of Encore azaleas, which were so successfully introduced to the DC area
some years ago at the Garden Fair
- Several new hybrid phlox
- A range of reblooming iris
- New, shorter delphiniums that are said to tolerate DC heat and humidity
-
Some very special small
flowering trees, including USNA's Prunus x "Dreamcatcher" and a number
of Prunus mume, which will be your delight in late winter for years to come
- The two sensational new hybrids of Calycanthus (our native Sweetshrub), one with
deep maroon flowers, the other with white.
- Some of the new series of Tiarellas which are named after regional rivers.
- An assortment of hardy terrestrial orchids and arisaemas, which have always been
coveted.
Each year we change our plant selection, always offering the most exceptional and
rare plants available. For a complete list of what the Friends of the National
Arboretum offered at the 2009 Garden Fair, click on the links below. Keep
